Benjamin E. Gilman Scholarship

Most readers of my blog probably don't know the main reason I created this blog. Sure it is a good way to keep my family and friends informed about my adventure abroad but it was created mainly for my study abroad follow-up project as a Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship recipient.

This blog is my Follow-up Project. I created this blog in order to show students at high schools back home (such as El Monte High and Whittier HIgh School) the benefits of studying in another country. It is also to promote the Gilman scholarship and studying abroad in general.

What is the Gilman Scholarship?

The Gilman Scholarship is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State for  Pell Grant recipients who are going to study abroad. Scholarship prizes range from $3000 to $8000 depending on where a student is going to travel and whether or not the student will be learning a critical language. Students who attend community colleges, 4 year public or private universities are all encouraged to apply. The scholarship targets students of a diverse background (i.e. not the typical study aboard student [Caucasian female]) who currently receive the Pell Grant as financial aid. The application process is quite easy and there is no GPA requirement to apply. However, there are GPA requirements for study abroad programs.

Gilman scholarship requirements to apply:

  • Open to all majors
  • U.S. citizen
  • Receive a Federal Pell Grant during the time you plan to study abroad
  • Be accepted into a study abroad program where the school credit is accepted by your home university in the US
  • Study abroad for at least 4 weeks
  • Study abroad university is not in Cuba or another country on the U.S. Department of State's current Travel Warning list
(list modified from Gilman's eligibility page)

Application process:

  • Online Application
  • Two Essays (maximum 1,200 words each)
    • Statement of Purpose Essay
    • Follow-up Project Proposal
  • Academic Advisor certification (to confirm that you are accepted into a study abroad program)
  • Financial Advisor certification (to confirm that you are receiving the Pell Grant)
Gilman is currently accepting applications for student going abroad for Summer 2011 and Fall 2011.
